Coping with Anxiety Over the Christmas Season

With Christmas less than a month away, festivities are on many people’s minds. Yummy food, time with family and friends, and exchanging gifts are the things that we look forward to all year. Unfortunately, for the four million Australians who have a disability, the Christmas season can be a stressful and emotional time too.

Some things that able people take for granted, such as work Christmas parties, can become a challenge if you live with a disability. If disability access in restaurants or other venues is poor, you might feel left out, or even like a burden. The added scheduling and planning involved can also be a cause of anxiety, especially if others are not understanding.

If you are autistic, the holiday season might be a challenge due to sensory overload, social anxiety, or other issues. Many autistic people struggle with the flashing lights of Christmas decorations and the noisy voices of many people talking at once.

There are many different reasons why the holiday period might be tough for you. Emotions of excitement and anticipation may intermingle with feelings of worry and anxiety. For some, the Christmas season might be one of isolation and loneliness. Many Australians struggle with these difficult situations and emotions, and it is important to remember support is available if you need it.
